AMVETS director comments on dismissal of Air Force officers

January 4, 2012

Professor Kyndra Rotunda

A commentary by Kyndra Rotunda, professor and director of the Chapman University Military Law Institute and its associated AMVETS Legal Clinic, regarding an Air Force plan to trim its budget by forcing early retirements and clipped retirement benefits on its officers appeared in the Dec. 28 issue of The Wall Street Journal.

“While budget constraints affect the entire Department of Defense, the other services have found other ways to pinch pennies,” Professor Rotunda writes. The opinion piece was co-authored by Joshua Flynn-Brown, a clinical fellow in the Chapman University AMVETS Legal Clinic.

Professor Rotunda is providing legal representation to several officers affected by the budgetary action. She is quoted in a story about the case in Battleland, a military blog published by Time magazine.

    Dear Dr. Rotunda,

Thank you for all you are doing to stand up for our service men and women. One of my family members has become one of the RIF statistics for the Air Force. He is currently scrambling to find a civilian position. He was a KC-135 pilot and would have been up for Major this spring and looking forward to years of serving his country.

In our current economic climate we can only hope and pray that he will be able to find something quickly.

Again, thank you for being the voice of reason.

    Sincerely,

    Deborah Hensel
