Student Union opens with a party
Free notebooks, drink cups, flying discs, sunglasses and zesty chicken wings flew into the hands of hundreds of students at today’s Opening Day Celebration of Chapman University’s new Student Union.
Sophomore communications major Jeremiah McKibbins was among the first students to clear the chicken wing line just moments after university and student government officials cut the ribbon and opened the doors to the Student Union, located on the first floor of Argyros Forum.
“It’s very nice, very sleek,” McKibbins said as he looked around the spacious great room decorated in a palette of green, blue, brown and beige. “And these wings are really, really good. I think I’ll definitely be here a lot for the wings.”
Construction crews worked through the summer to ready the new Student Union, which includes a variety of seating, meeting nooks, a stage, multipurpose room, televisions, rentable game systems, patios and three new eateries – World of Wings, Jamba Juice and Einstein Bros. Bagels. Besides wings and a flock of dipping sauces, World of Wings offers sliders, burgers, wraps, salads and a heap of fried goodies, from onion rings to pickles. The Jamba Juice station has the full menu of a regular retail outlet. In addition, morning commuters and late-night noshers will find regular and specialty coffees and bagels — and even “bagel thins” — at Einstein Bros. Bagels.
The free wings caught most students’ attention, but junior integrated educational studies major Jamie Ioimo ditched the food lines and promptly installed herself on a comfy chair and opened her laptop.
“I don’t know what all those people are doing,” Ioimo joked, nodding toward the students lining up for free food samples. “I’m just going to stretch out here.”
Additional work on the Argyros Forum project will include moving a variety of administration offices to the second floor and the addition of a Faculty Club on the third floor.
