A celebration 150 years in the making
Fireworks, interactive exhibits for the kids, a beer and wine garden for the grown-ups, a doo-wop concert, hot dogs for everyone, art tours and tons and tons of cake. Sounds like someone around here is having a big birthday.
Yes, it’s officially time to start counting down the days to Chapman University’s 150th Anniversary Birthday Party and Open House, an extravaganza of free activities and treats that will kick off at 3 p.m. Friday, May 6 in Attallah Piazza. Classes and university offices will be released early and the community is invited, so mark the calendar and plan to join the fun.
Youngsters can enjoy bounce houses, face painting and balloon artists. Each college will host interactive children’s booths, so there will be a little of everything.
Adult activities include master classes from extraordinary Chapman professors, including Marvin Meyer, Ph.D., an antiquities and Gnostic gospels expert who’s appeared on ABC, BBC, CNN, PBS, A&E, the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, and the National Geographic Channel; Marilyn Harran, Ph.D., renowned Holocaust expert; Liliana Leopardi, Ph.D., Italian Renaissance art expert; Tom Campbell, Ph.D., former U.S. congressman and the newly named dean of Chapman School of Law; Tibor Machan, Ph.D., business ethics expert and syndicated columnist; and Don Booth, Ph.D., beloved economics professor for more than 50 years.
A campus art tour will be offered, and the evening will culminate with an enormous birthday cake crafted to look like Memorial Hall, a rousing concert by the acclaimed doo-wop group The Alley Cats and a fireworks show.
Everyone is invited to start the celebration right now by visiting the university’s 150th Anniversary website, where there are opportunities to share treasured Chapman memories, make predictions for its future, purchase anniversary gear, read about special projects or make an anniversary gift.
