Tweet this — NASA astronaut to join Rodgers Center discussion

October 5, 2010

Astronaut Michael Massimino will teleconference via live satellite to Tuesday discussion of "An Article of Faith."

Hey, Tweeters. If you love “first ever” stories, this one is for you.

The first person to use Twitter from space will join a special panel discussion at Chapman tonight, Tuesday, live from Houston in a live via video teleconference.

Michael Massimino, Ph.D., NASA astronaut, Mission Specialist on STS-109 and 125, will participate in the panel discussion to follow  the 7 p.m. screening of the documentary “An Article of Faith”  in Memorial Hall tonight.

The screening is sponsored by Chapman University’s Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education and showcases a must-see documentary. “An Article of Faith” recounts  the extraordinary story of Israel’s first astronaut and a tiny Nazi-era Torah he carried to the heights of space on the ill-fated 2003 Columbia space shuttle. Attending the Memorial Hall screening will be producer/director Dan Cohen and producer Christopher Cowen.

Col. Ilan Ramon was among the crew of seven aboard the Columbia shuttle. The son of an Auschwitz survivor, Ilan felt a deep sense of obligation to Holocaust memory and witness. Among the few objects he chose to take with him into space was a barbed wire mezzuzah given to him by The “1939” Club, an organization of Holocaust survivors and their descendents, partners in Holocaust education with Chapman University’s Rodgers Center.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Rodgers center at 714-628-7377 or visit the Holocaust education website.
