Campus Confidential, Aug. 19

August 19, 2010

Here’s a sneak peek at the new medal created for participants in this year’s Annual Chapman University Toyota of Orange 5K Run/Walk. You don’t even have to win the race to earn this stylish prize. All who cross the finish line receive one of these beauties, designed by1000km Promotions (Pty) Ltd in Bedfordview, South Africa, which designs medals for most of the major races in the United States and Europe.

The Academic Advising Center has settled into its new offices in Beckman Hall, Suite 406, and will be open for walk-in consultations the first week of classes, Aug. 30 to Sept. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.  Monday and Tuesday, and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. They’ll hold an open house Sept. 16 for everyone to meet the new advisors – and enjoy the great fourth-floor views of the campus and surrounding cities.

Former Orange Mayor James Beam, left, in studio with Dan Noah, production supervisor for Panther Productions.

James Beam, an Orange native, long-time businessman and former mayor, stopped by Panther Productions this week to tape a reflective presentation on city history. It’s all part of a special presentation he’ll make at a Jan. 27 meeting of the Orange Community Historical Society, so save the date if you’d like to hear his wonderful stories, among them the account of how his football coach at the old Orange High School kept his players in shape and out of trouble by finding them all fruit-picking jobs each summer.

Who picks up all that trash after the Orange International Street Fair? Will there be more seating this year? And should you take a stroller to the fair after 6 p.m.? If you’ve never been to the festival staged in Old Towne Orange every Labor Day Weekend, you might want to read the latest post at I Heart Old Towne Orange, where blogger Kelly Borgen dishes all the details. And if you’ve been to the fair, you already know the answer to the stroller question – don’t even try.

There will be more details coming on this in the near future, but the Department of Athletics just announced who will be inducted into the Chapman University Athletics Hall of Fame at its Oct. 2 banquet. So mark your calendars and get ready to celebrate the accomplishments of Sandy Galbraith ’69, golf; Melody (Bongiorno) Frank, ’04, basketball; and Craig Bennett ’96, soccer.
