Three team members from Chapman University’s College of Performing Arts (CoPA) won second place at the Orange County Fair for a table-setting creation that is helping them promote an important upcoming theatre production at Chapman.

Heather (Stoltzfus) Westenhofer, assistant to the associate dean, along with Associated Dean Dale Merrill and Clara Harnett, secretary in the Department of Dance, entered the competition called “Setting for a Gala.” Their second-place finish comes on the heels of a third-place award earned in the same category a year ago.

Judges praised this year’s setting with words such as “Enjoyed the blending of the Japanese and American cultures with table design,” “Love the centerpiece with the origami” and “Love the representation of the letters of war.”

“We spent a little over a month having meetings and reading over the text of the play (If All the Sky Were Paper) trying to make the setting perfect,” said Stoltzfus.  “Each of us came up with our own little pieces and came up with something unique.”

In November, Chapman will stage a world premiere of If All the Sky Were Paper, based on Andrew Carroll’s bestselling books and featuring selections from 85,000 never-before-seen letters of war. The letters cover the full spectrum of emotions, from humorous and profound to dramatic and inspiring.  The Department of Theatre is staging the play as a tribute to the immeasurable sacrifices made by America’s veterans and as an unforgettable reminder of war’s impact on both those who fight and their loved ones on the home front.

The play opens appropriately on Veterans Day 2010, and a symposium is being planned that will include Carroll.  Performances will be Nov. 11-13 and 18-20 in Waltmar Theatre.  For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit the College of Performing Arts Website or call 714-744-7087.

The table setting will be on display at the fair through Aug. 15.
