U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez ’82 spoke to a gathering of Orange County small-business owners and lenders attending the “OC Business Lending Forum” today at Chapman University, updating them on efforts in Washington to boost economic recovery.

Rep. Sanchez recounted family members’ struggle in the economy, talked about government supports to help small business and defended federal spending as a critical part of reseeding economic growth.

“There’s a reason we’re spending. Because if we don’t spend, no one else is going to,” the congresswoman said.

Rep. Sanchez’s opening remarks launched a panel discussion titled “Overcoming Current Business Lending Challenges.”

Among the panel participants was Rachel Baranick, deputy district director for the U.S. Small Business Administration. Baranick told the audience, “I think we are turning the tide.” In the past year, her Orange County office has granted 80 percent more loans than a year ago and 100 percent more in actual dollars loaned, Baranick said.

The event was sponsored by the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and Chapman University.
